Osteopathy
Whole-body osteopathic techniques balancing structure and function for chronic pain and posture issues.
Osteopathy
Although the name contains “osteo,” osteopathy is not limited to bones and joints. It is a whole-person medical approach that stresses the interrelation of the body’s systems and uses manual treatment to support the body’s self-healing.
Core principles
- The body is a unit of body, mind and spirit.
- The body has the capacity for self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance.
- Structure and function are interrelated (e.g. muscle tension can cause visceral discomfort).
- Rational treatment is based on applying these principles.
The osteopath’s role is to find areas of dysfunction (tight muscle, restricted joint) by hand and help the body return to balance, awakening its own healing ability.
Scope of treatment
- Bones & joints: facet dysfunction, joint pain.
- Muscle & fascia: relieving tension and adhesion.
- Nervous system: easing nerve compression via spinal adjustment (e.g. sciatica).
- Circulation: promoting blood and lymph flow.
- Visceral function: techniques on visceral ligaments to aid digestion or breathing.
- Craniosacral system: regulating CSF flow for headaches, tinnitus, etc.
Common techniques
- Muscle energy technique: with the patient’s active participation, “contract–relax” cycles ease chronic tension and restricted range.
- Myofascial release: gentle, sustained pressure on restricted fascia — gentle and non-invasive, suited to fibromyalgia, scar adhesions and posture issues.
- High-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA): a quick, short thrust to a restricted joint to restore range.
- Rib-raising: regulating sympathetic tone and improving breathing.
- Lymphatic pump: pumping techniques to boost lymph circulation and immunity.
- Diaphragm-doming: relaxing the core breathing muscle to ease neck/chest/back pain.
- Cranial osteopathy: gentle work suitable for all ages, aiding sleep and the autonomic system.
Examples of indications
Acute and chronic pain (back, neck), sports injuries, whole-body symptoms from poor posture, and some functional conditions (e.g. adjunctive care for IBS).
Osteopathy is drug-free and non-invasive, balancing structure and function to ease discomfort. Results vary between individuals.
