Bone-setting & Traumatology

More than just sprains and falls

Can low back pain or knee degeneration be treated by TCM traumatology? In fact, TCM traumatology is comparable to a combined orthopaedics, rehabilitation and pain clinic — any pain of the muscles, joints or nerves can be treated, not only injuries caused by external force.

How treatment works

Correct diagnosis comes first — identifying the affected area and the cause. Spinal and bone-setting techniques then correct joint misalignment, while tui-na and soft-tissue techniques relieve muscle tension and spasm. Methods include:

  • Bone-setting & tui-na: hands-on techniques over meridians, acupoints and specific areas to relieve aches and fatigue.
  • Acupuncture: needling acupoints to address injury of related organs and meridians; electro-acupuncture or moxa may be added when needed.
  • Medicines: internal or external/topical herbal preparations as appropriate.

Effects

  • Relax tendons and free adhesions
  • Promote circulation, reduce swelling and pain

What it treats

The scope is broad, covering tendon, bone and joint conditions:

  • Soft-tissue injury: ligaments, muscles, tendons.
  • Bone injury: fractures, fracture sequelae, dislocation and subluxation.
  • Bone disease: osteoporosis, degenerative arthritis, scoliosis, etc.

Common areas

  • Neck/shoulder/back/leg pain (most common): cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation and sciatica, frozen shoulder, knee arthritis, heel pain.
  • Joint conditions: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and gouty arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, synovitis.
  • Spinal conditions: spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, compression fractures.
  • Soft-tissue & sports injuries: strains and sprains, tennis/golfer’s elbow, de Quervain’s (“mother’s hand”), bone spurs, fasciitis, runner’s/jumper’s knee, ankle sprain, rotator-cuff injury.
