Eczema (TCM)

Acupuncture, herbal medicine and lymphatic work to clear damp-heat and restore the skin barrier.

Eczema (TCM)

Why does eczema keep coming back?

Eczema is a chronic, inflammatory, itchy skin condition. Its core problem is a damaged skin barrier plus uncontrolled inflammation:

  • Weak skin barrier: the “brick-wall” structure of the stratum corneum breaks down, letting irritants and allergens penetrate and trigger inflammation.
  • Over-active immune response: the immune system over-reacts to minor stimuli, releasing inflammatory mediators that cause redness, itch and oozing.

Common triggers of recurrence

  1. Ongoing allergen exposure: dust mites, pollen, pet dander; milk, egg, seafood, nuts; cosmetics, metals (nickel), detergents.
  2. Barrier damage: hot-water washing, over-cleansing, over-exfoliation, insufficient moisturising.
  3. Immune imbalance & uncontrolled inflammation: stress, late nights, infection; stopping treatment too early; co-existing rhinitis or asthma.
  4. Environment: dry/cold air, heat and humidity, air pollution.
  5. Scratching and its secondary damage.
  6. Diet & lifestyle: spicy food, high sugar/fat, late nights and stress.

The TCM view

TCM sees eczema as arising from an intolerant constitution and irregular diet, with external wind, where wind-damp-heat invades the skin — closely related to the Heart, Lung, Liver and Spleen channels. It is often a damp-heat pattern: when damp and heat cannot be cleared normally they settle in the skin; the root often lies in Spleen deficiency failing to transform dampness.

TCM treatment

  • Acupuncture: clearing damp-heat and relieving itch (e.g. Quchi, Hegu, Xuehai); strengthening the Spleen and nourishing blood (e.g. Zusanli, Sanyinjiao); calming points to aid sleep.
  • Herbal medicine: internal formulas tailored by pattern (clearing heat, strengthening the Spleen, nourishing blood); external washes (e.g. sophora, dictamnus, kochia) to ease itch.
  • Lymphatic techniques: the lymphatic system is both a drainage and an immune system; manual lymphatic work helps clear waste and support immunity, assisting skin problems.

A note

Recurrent eczema is not “delicate skin” but a combination of barrier damage, uncontrolled inflammation and unaddressed triggers. Improvement requires avoiding triggers, repairing the barrier and controlling inflammation, with patient, science-based care. Results vary between individuals.
